We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, 01.12.2022 at 6 pm.
EN_Within the exhibition, the two former Dresden artists, Maja Gratzfeld and Anna Schapiro, dedicate themselves singularly to the dye purple, its history and its symbolism from antiquity to the present. Maja Gratzfeld has been working on the historical production of purple since 2018 and will present fragments of colour production vessels from the Late Bronze to Late Byzantine periods. Anna Schapiro dedicates herself to colour as such and approaches the dye and its effect in relation to space by working on the walls of the gallery in terms of the mixing ratio. If one searches for purple in Dresden museums, a supposed history of prosperity emerges – but the palette is also closely associated with sexuality and identity, alongside traditional symbolic interpretations such as oppulence and sublimity. Blue as the colour for heterosexuality, pink for homosexuality, purple as that of bisexuality and nonbinarity. Purple thus also unites the fragile, the marginalised, the unassignable, the in-between. Visualisations of precisely these spectra are the capital of the artistic work of the two artists and ultimately also that which makes democratic societies capable of action. With the help of the purple installation as a network, the two artists bring personal and socially highly relevant themes back to their city of study, Dresden, and formulate a poetic response of being in-between.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen and the Amt für Kultur und Denkmalschutz der Landeshauptstadt Dresden.
